What is a sliding puzzle?

A sliding puzzle is a number sliding puzzle game where tiles are scrambled inside a square frame with one empty slot. You slide adjacent tiles into the empty space, one move at a time, until the numbers read 1 to 15 (for the 4×4 fifteen puzzle) or 1 to 8 (for the 3×3 sliding puzzle). It’s one of the oldest mechanical puzzles in the world and still one of the most satisfying logic puzzles to solve.

How to solve a 3×3 sliding puzzle

  1. Solve the top row first: place 1, then 2, then use the “L-trick” to slide 3 into the top-right corner.
  2. Solve the left column of the middle row (tile 4), then the middle row.
  3. The bottom row solves itself with a final rotation — if it doesn’t, the board is one move from unsolvable, so reshuffle.

How to solve the 15 puzzle (4×4)

  1. Lock the top row (1–4) using the corner trick for the last two tiles.
  2. Lock the second row (5–8) the same way.
  3. Solve the bottom two rows column by column: 9 & 13 together, 10 & 14 together, then rotate 11, 12, 15 into place.

Frequently asked questions

Is this sliding puzzle free?

Yes — every sliding puzzle game on this page is free to play online, forever.

How do I solve a 3×3 sliding puzzle?

Solve the top row, then the left column, then rotate the bottom-right 2×2 until it clicks. If the last three tiles form a 3-cycle you can’t resolve, the scramble is unsolvable and you need to reshuffle.

Can this help with the Palia sliding puzzles?

Yes. The mechanics are the same as the Palia Temple of Roots, Eye of the Storm and Return to the Room sliding puzzles — practice here and the in-game one becomes easy.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes — tap a tile next to the empty slot to slide it. No app install required.
